A hot-off-the-press, ten-year prospective study from Harvard showed that women consuming the highest levels of DHA had a 38% reduction in risk, and of EPA a 34% reduction in risk, of developing macular degeneration (AMD).
Unfortunately, the authors did not include the amount of DHA and EPA associated with the highest consumption levels, except to note that it amounted to 1.3% and 0.6% of the total energy consumption, respectively.
They did look at risk reduction for consumption of 1 serving of fish per week, and found that it reduced risk by 42%. The primary fish associated with the reduction was canned tuna fish and dark-meat fishes.
The authors suggest that the role of omega-3′s in modulating the inflammatory and immune responses may explain the effect.
